Rebecca Grimes

Soprano

Texas native Rebecca Grimes possesses a versatile artistry that spans from teaching to directing to performing.  As an Opera Workshop instructor at the University of Connecticut, she teaches young singers the art of stage performing, including acting techniques, auditioning, and aria preparation.

As a director, she has directed a number of opera scenes, programs for the University of Connecticut as well as for her own opera company, Opera del West based in Natick, MA.  Ms. Grimes’ diverse experience as a performer includes such roles as Venus in the Prologue of Dido and Aeneas for the Amherst Early Music Festival, Zerlina in Don Giovanni for Opera in the Ozarks, Angelina in Trial by Jury and La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Opera, The Shepherdess in L’enfant et les Sortileges for Loyola University Opera and The Second Knitter in A Game of Chance with the New England Conservatory Opera Workshop. 

Roles at the University of Connecticut include Rosina in Haydn’s La Vera Constanza and Belinda in Dido and Aeneas.  As an oratorio soloist, Ms. Grimes has been featured in such works as the Mozart Mass in C Minor with the St. Paul Chamber Music Society in Houston, Texas, and the Brahms Ein Deutches Requiem with the Loyola Chorale in New Orleans, Louisiana. Other solo oratorio performances include Gasparini’s L’oraculo del Fato, Handel’s Messiah, Faure’s Requiem and Britten’s Rejoice In The Lamb. 

As a 2004 winner of the University of Connecticut Concerto Competition, Ms. Grimes was featured with the University of Connecticut Orchestra in an all-Handel program.  Recent engagements include Bach Cantata 51 with the St. Barnabas Choir and Orchestra as well as the role of Roxanne in L’Europe Galante for Amherst Early Music Festival.  She will be making her debut with Worcester OperaWorks this spring as Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze de Figaro. 

Ms. Grimes has been featured in recital throughout the greater Boston area, and holds a master’s degree from New England Conservatory in Boston.  She is currently a doctoral student and teaching fellow at the University of Connecticut, where she maintains a studio of voice students for the University.
